This notice applies to our practices for collecting and processing personal information related to the Genomic Literature Knowledge Base (GLKB) website and application (“GLKB”, “we”, “us”, or “our”). For other activities conducted by the University of Michigan that involve the collection and processing of personal information, see the university’s general privacy statement.

What Information We Collect
GLKB collects the following personal information in these ways:
When you directly provide it to us, like when you log in and input information into the GLKB application, or when you contact us. Directly collected information may include:
- Your name, email address, username, password, and other registration information;
- Information you provide us when you contact us for help; and
- Transaction-related information, such as when you use features of the GLKB application that rely on user input.
When technology captures your information automatically, such as when we store information about your digital interactions. The information may be collected through the use of cookies and web beacons and is automatically stored in log files each time you visit the GLKB website and log into the GLKB application. Automatically collected information may include:
- Device information, such as type of device you use, the IP address of your device, your operating system, the type of Internet browsers you use, and location information;
- Digital interaction information, such as sites used to access/leave each page, information about the way you use the GLKB application, date, time, and length of your visits.
When we receive information through integration with third-party learning management systems (LMS) using the Learning Tools Interoperability® (LTI) standard. LTI-enabled transfers include account information (username and/or email address connected to the account) linked to the LMS you are using.
When third-party advertising and marketing providers, such as Google Analytics, capture your information on our behalf. Examples of information captured by third-party service providers include:
- approximate geo location; and
- device and browser information.
How We Use Personal Information
We use information about your interactions with our website and application to:
- Provide a service and user support to you
- Communicate relevant announcements and updates with you
- Enable reporting and analytics: Such as publishing anonymized statistics to provide insights on usage and engagement and internal reporting and analysis that allows us to improve the GLKB application
- Conduct research: To improve GLKB, evaluate system performance, develop new features, and support biomedical research, using personal information only as permitted by applicable law and University policy.
- To satisfy legal, regulatory, or contractual obligations
With Whom We Share Personal Information
We do not sell or rent your personal information collected here. We may, however, share your personal information with university partners or external service providers that support business activities, such as Google for web hosting and Amazon Web Services (AWS) for cloud infrastructure.
We may also share your personal information when required by law, or when we believe sharing will help to protect the safety, property, or rights of the university, members of the university community, and university guests.
What Choices You Can Make About Your Information
Registered users may view, edit, and delete via the User Account Panel certain information submitted to GLKB.
If you would like us to update, correct, or delete your personal information, or permanently delete your registered user account, please contact us at admin@glkb.org and include the phrase “Personal Data Request” in the subject line of your message. Please note that some or all of the information we collect may be required in order for GLKB to function properly, or we may be required to retain certain information by law.
If you do not want us to contact you with marketing communications, you can let us know by following the unsubscribe instructions on any communications sent to you. You can also unsubscribe at any time by contacting us at admin@glkb.org. Please note that opting out of marketing communications does not affect communications related to your account, registration, Your use of GLKB, such as messages relating to account management, customer service and system maintenance.
How We Keep Personal Information Secure
The University of Michigan recognizes the importance of maintaining the security of the information it collects. We strive to protect information from unauthorized access and damage, and ensure reasonable security measures are in place to keep your personal information secure and comply with relevant laws and regulations, including the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
